The collaborative work of Scottish visual artist, Valerie Dempsey, and Dutch landscape architect, Ronald Boer, engages with the relationship between man and nature. As a result of their different disciplines their artistic practice creates a unique combination of fine art and landscape architecture. Their aim is to explore their surroundings and create alternative representations through installations, assemblages and paintings. All their work begins with research outdoors and so accurately reflects the experience of the environments they represent.
They have studied salt from the atomic level to its effect on ecosystems. In particular, they have reflected on the balanced gradient between fresh and salt water, where sea meets land, and are interested in comparing the more natural equilibrium that occurs in the Forth valley to the anomalies that occur on the Dutch coast through man’s intervention. It is important for them to resolve the gap that occurs between research, ideas and final work.
